Water’s Edge
Swimming pools and sunbathers are an archetypical California image. They evoke the carefree lifestyle, surburban dreams, warm weather. These icons of the outdoor suburban landscape have been mainstays of artists including Slim Aarons, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, Josep Moncada, and Eric Zener.
For this series, I have chosen an aerial view, where the picture plan is flattened. The pool surface recalls an abstract expressionist color field and the edges make a nod to Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series. They were created with a combination of photographs of real bathers and acrylic paint.
