Totem Bathers
Start with raw planks of lumber. Plane them. Saw them. Carve them. Sand them. Gesso them. Then paint them with a series of torsos and bathing suits.
These painted sculptures either hang on the wall or are free standing with a base. They are solid poplar wood with acrylic paint, mostly around 7’ tall. They were inspired by the iconographic images of Southern California beach women and men, from surfers to sunbathers. I chose as the form for these work, the totem poles, which originated from the Native peoples for the Pacific Northwest. Their meanings mirror those of the Totem Bathers: presenting a range of complex and symbolic mythologies. Pricing is from $2,000. Inquire about availability and current pricing here.
Here are close-ups of many of the faces, made into a limited edition print: 30 Bathers
